Time to show you the final block to arrive for the Give a F*ck project!
The quilt overall will need some sort of sashing to allow me to increase some block sizes and to frame out and separate some of the busier blocks from each other. It’s been a struggle to audition fabrics for it because it doesn’t seem that there’ll be one fabric that will work for ALL the blocks. I’m thinking that I might use 53 different sashing fabrics! Or maybe a scrappy sashing? But that could look too busy overall…
And then there’s the layout to contemplate. I don’t want to make a regular, evenly spaced grid of blocks. My inspiration is those old cabinets of wonder: open-topped wooden boxes with irregularly placed compartments holding fascinating things. There’s a mock-up of this with a few blocks below the jump.
Disclaimer: The f*ck word appears down below. If that’s gonna be a problem, then don’t scroll down. Instead go learn about how little we respect women and their rights in this nation. Virginia wants to probe you. So does Pennsylvania.

This filet crochet block made by Beverly is unique and quite lovely in person. My photography skills are not up to the task of capturing the word very well. But you can see it well in person.
Just squint a bit. It might actually be more visible in a smaller sized photo.
Here’s the mock-up of the concept of the quilt. The scales are all off and they won’t meet in such a square fashion. I dunno, this mock-up doesn’t really show what I want to do.
I guess I should just hunker down and do it and hope I don’t wreck all the blocks that folks made.

This is going to be so wonderful! Would a scrappy-neutrals sashing work? Varying beige/white/offwhites/khaki etc? It would be varied, without being too busy?
It’s funny to me that seeing the word “fuck” over and over in quilt form kind of takes away the meaning of the word. Like how when you say any word over and over it just starts sounding like nothing, or when you psych yourself out when trying to spell a word because it never looks right no matter how you write it. I also imagine this quilt as an ‘I spy’ quilt. I spy a purple fuck! I spy an embroidered fuck! It’s going to be so awesome!
whatever u do will be tfa xoxo pam
So excited that you are entering the piecing stage! love it!
Beverly’s block make me think of a Burka and I find it most sutiable with the latest hot subject on the news these days!.
I am sure your final quilt will be amazing and will serve all these blocks right. If you don’t feel the love for what you do, leave it alone for awhile and you will find it when you come back to it, I am sure.
Ooh, that scrappy neutrals idea for the sashing. I feel pretty confident leaving my block in your hands. And if you eff it up, that would be sort of meta.
I like the scrappy neutral idea, too. I also love your idea to make leave /add some variance to the block sizes. It’s going to be awesome!
I have a rule…If I don’t know what a quilt needs, add black and white prints. I find that they make a great unifying element. I’d suggest using a multitude of b/w prints to sash or at least auditioning on the wall.
Have LOVED this series and can’t wait to see your finished project!
This quilt will be amazing and creative and wonderful because you are C.
I don’t think you could mess up our blocks if you tried. It’s already kinda loud and kooky. How about different reds as sashing? Red is a kooky neutral. I really like where it’s going and I’m sure it will end up being super.
I’d just stitch them together in a kind of ‘crazy’ quilt… with different stitches in between them.
Whatever you decide it’ll be great.
My go to neutral is grey and sometimes white, but you could also use black or navy blue. I like the idea of scrappy white/ivory/cream/beige, too.
Cool. Maybe something like an ashlar paving pattern? http://www.kgostone.com/ilc/Copy%20of%20patio_pavers_0001.jpg
It will be interesting to see how you combine these.
I just plain can’t wait to see it. I think personally I’d take into consideration what the real purpose of the quilt is for you, because YOU are the unifying element.
What has it come to mean for you?
What are YOU hoping to say with the quilt?
What does it read best around?
Do you plan on ever hanging it or having it published? Decisions that could change what you do as white rarely reads well from afar and certain colors with busy prints don’t photograph well.
Stay true to your vision. And if all else fails….F#Ck It.
I have full faith it’s going to come out fabulously, I love the cabinet of wonders approach instead of a grid. It makes it almost look spoken, the way some people scream the Fbomb and some mutter it under their breath, just a little quiet intense swear.
Each block by itself is beautiful and powerful. Together, their power becomes a force to be reckoned with, and cannot be denied. How I wish the politicians in PA, VA, etc. etc. were as smart as these fabrics, and get the idea that women’s bodies are not politicians’ toys to f*** around with.
Speaking of Virginia and Pennsylvania, I just read a great short story about what might happen should not a fuck be given about women’s bodies: ILU-486.
I’m excited to see the end product of this. I have confidence that you’ll figure it out.
This particular disclaimer…it says so much doesn’t it?
can’t wait to see what you decide!
