Do you know about QuiltCon? Organized by the national organization, The Modern Quilt Guild, this likely is the first national convention focused on celebrating the “modern” quilt.
Now, I have read all the various stabs taken at defining the term “modern” and I still have no clue what is meant by it. Many are self-serving and narrow-minded definitions, but if we gather them together we can find a rather inclusive umbrella for “contemporary” quilts. Let’s go with that for today? I certainly hope to see a wide variety of quilts there.
So…a couple of my quilts are sleeved and ready for their public debuts at the convention later this month.
Yes. Let’s go ahead and praise the intestinal fortitude of the panel that juried Give a F*ck into a public exhibition. This certainly is a quilt meant to do something in a community and this will be interesting to experience. It’s an honor also to have my applique miniquilt entry accepted, but I am more proud of the other one getting in—and super happy for my co-conspirator potty-mouthed patchworkers.
Now…cross your fingers for good postal karma.

Wish I could be there- how great is this?!
That’s great news!
Congratulations on your quilts getting into the show!
I lost my quilting mojo some time ago, and have been blog hopping as part of my attempt to get it back. I admit to having some trouble grasping the definition of modern quilting. I recently decided I would just use what I have and do what I want and not worry about definitions.
Yes. THIS. I’m so confused by what people consider ‘modern’ quilts – I guess that’s a sign of a developing art form.
I’m so, so super happy you’re heading to QuiltCon. We’ll see what happens.
Could you please, when you have time, elaborate on how you made your nice looking sleeve? I’m quite afraid of doing it wrong and wrecking my pretty quilt. I’ve received such conflicting advice on how to do it correctly, and your advice is always correct (INTP)
Here’s a link to my treasure.

Cool treasure!
I just used this tutorial: http://tallgrassprairiestudio.blogspot.com/2012/02/hang-your-quilt-hanging-sleeve-tutorial.html
Good going C!!!!! I’m as confused as you are regarding the definition.
How exciting that your quilts will be at quiltcon. I would love to see the reacts on some of the faces. Interesting indeed.
As far as a definition for modern quilting? I’ve pretty much just settled on quilting, but I’m not sure how well that would go over in some circles.
Thats brilliant news! Wish I could attend, I’d so love to see that quilt… And yes, massive cheer for the panel that said yes to its display! Awesome :-)
ooh sending many good postal vibes for its transportation – many congratulatons in getting in!
fingers crossed!!!!!! wohoo!
hip hip hooray! happy for you to have 2 quilts in this kick off show – I am sure it is so going to rock…sorry I can not attend this year. Sounds like you will be? hopefully if that is the case you can share with us how folks respond to your quilts. well done C
so excited that I get to see the give a f*** in person! I have no idea what makes a quilt “modern”, but I would imagine covering it profanities might have something to do with it ;-)
How great to see that quilt making a personal appearance. Wish I could be there to witness that.
With all the comments wishing they could see and even hear the reactions maybe it would be fun to set up a movie camera to get photos of the reactions to the quilt. Kind of a candid camera show.
yay- congratulations!! <3
Way to go! Much, much, much deserved. Enjoy and soak it all up!!!!!
I agree – the more I think about what modern quilting is, the more I don’t get it! Although I really enjoy being a part of a “modern” guild.
And I am so glad your quilt was juried in to the show! Brings back some credibility to the process in my mind … I was stunned at several of the quilts that were rejected. I am going to Austin, and now I have something else to look forward to – seeing your quilts “in person”!
Excellent – I have no idea about this quilt con, but for accepting those two items, they get a thumbs up in my book. As for the term Modern Quilts, well. Not to bring up the old “not your grandma’s (fill-in-the-blank),” but my grandma’s generation made a lot of what we consider to be Modern Art. And then there was PostModern and now …
So here’s a really long story.
I think of meeting my little 12-year old neighbor on the sidewalk, on the way to the train. Yes, she was going to subway to get herself to school ALL ALONE, in NEW YORK CITY, and we had the following dialogue:
me: Are you eating candy?
girl: Yes. Ohmygod, don’ttellmymom I’m having candy for breakfast.
me: No worries.
girl: I love this candy. It’s so MODERN.
me: Really? (I see it’s “fun dip,” a brief childhood favorite of mine, meaning, let’s say, at least 20 years old – sweet-tart powder that sticks to a candy stick and you lick & dip into the envelope of powder).
girl: Yes. It CHANGES FLAVOR when you eat it.
I prefer to think of “Modern” anything as the kind that CHANGES FLAVOR. Modern architecture? Changes flavor. Modern quilting? Changes flavor as you consume it. End the quandary right there, I think.
That is so awesome! We’re heading to QuiltCon, so I’m so exited to see Give a F*ck in person.
I was feeling a little sorry for myself, that my quilt was not accepted. But I am proud that two of yours were accepted, and that I got to be a small part of one of those! Both of these projects deserve to be celebrated, and I can’t wait to see them in person! And you, of course!
I like Amber’s changing flavor definition above.
I’m with you, re the definition if “modern”. I’ve heard more than one doyen of Modern say it is like pornography: you know it when you see it. Not helpful.
But whatever, I’m glad they are having this gathering & very excited about an opportunity to meet an artist I admire (you) in person!
congrats! both of those quilts deserve to be displayed! xoxo
I know nothing of the politics surrounding the quilting community but I do think it is amazing that your Give a F*ck quilt will be put on exhibition. I’m seriously impressed by this decision. Congrats C!
I’ll be so happy to see some of your works in person!
I am so excited to find this blog and your work! I hope you will be able to attend Quiltcon in addition to your work being displayed. I was unaware of the “Give a f*ck” initiative as I am a newbie and somewhat clueless in many ways. Your work has blown me away. My husband suggests that, with your kind permission, I make quilts for his nephews with the “You are so fucking awesome” expresson. Thanks for opening me up to a whole new genre.
