How are ya? I feel like I haven’t spoken to you lately. How are the kids? How’s work? Things are much the same here, though I’m forcing myself to find peaceful moments more often to keep the stress from overtaking me. Surely everything will work out soon, but it’s the need for patience that saps all energy.
If you’d like to see more of the doodles I do, I’m posting daily over on Instagram (@cauchcomplete). And, despite my best judgement, I just joined facebook. Not sure what I’ll use fb for, so give me a moment there.
Honestly, I think I’m sewing all these tiny pieces, in part, because it’s more controlling. Don’t get me wrong: I love the look of the work and the challenge of figuring out how not to make a patchwork of clown barf. But also it can be comforting to obsess a little here and there about the small details.
Made this one from the black scraps of a quilt I started a year ago and finally finished last weekend. Here’s a peek. I’ll show more later.
How about some links?
- I’ve so far been too distracted to read Addicted to Distraction, a NYTimes opinion piece on all the shiny things online that fragment our attention. My mind is just so split that I have to keep returning to read it. Somehow he managed to wean himself off of it all and I gotta see if it’ll work for me.
- The embroidery of Rosalind Wyatt isn’t wow-ing me, but there’s something sweet about it. What do you think?
- On the other hand, I think we all have much to learn from the truly minimalist quilts of Daphne Taylor. They are sweetly calm and spare and inspiring. I think I’ll doodle more in this vein soon, though I’ll never be as good as she is in her designs. Wow! Definitely a wow.
I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving, if that’s your thing. And I wish us all an amazing December!
xo xo,

Hello back! I think a lot of quilting is about working with and without control and the development of patience. Hand-quilting (for me, at least) is a centering, meditative practice. If I didn’t have it, I’d be an ultra-marathoner (maybe). By the looks of your first quilt, I’d say you already are. I look forward to where you are going with it. Not to add more to your required reading list, but please read Addicted to Distraction. Whoa – makes total sense.
It is always a delight to see your work and hear of how you approach it. Hope you have respite as needed.
Take care.
Wow, that Addicted to Distraction article really hits home. Much food for thought there. Congratulations on the recent finish; it looks like another very powerful quilt.
Hello to you! Glad we have one holiday down and I am focused on finishing holiday knitting so I can then return to my choice of a crafty day. Quilting or knitting my pleasure of the day. Have a wonderful holiday!

That black scrap quilt is absolutely stunning and is definitely wow-ing me!
I love that you post your doodles on Intsagram. It’s neat to see what ideas you are playing with.
You must have linked to something in the past that lead me to Daphne Taylor, because I saw those quilts recently. It got me thinking about hand quilting a whole cloth quilt but making it fit with the Modern Quilting aesthetic. I’m not sure where that would lead me. I’m also not sure I have the time to find out. Not even if I wasn’t addicted to distraction.
I love following your blog. I look forward to reading and viewing most everyday. I do follow along on instagram as well. Instagram for me is really just a quick way to view the photos of what one is doing…the ongoing dialogue of the blog is really what inspires me the most. As for FB…you’re a brave soul (:-))…I have yet to muster the desire or intention of that social medium…but I do as that you PLEASE continue on with your blog…I LOVE WHAT YOU DO HERE! BTW…I’m sewtuf on ravelry and afrisoulchile on instagram!
Thanks for continuing doing what you do…you’re brilliant, you are!
Your work is inspiring. This quilt is literally and figuratively breathtaking. I find slight irony in the fact that you signed up for FB as I deleted my account. The political rants and over shares there were making me judgey and happier to have disengaged-pondering more of that even with IG as making for an audience has it’s downsides. Wishing you peace and light.

Hey back! Kids aren’t sick anymore and I got to sew BY MYSELF this weekend, so that will be a highlight of my year I think. Got two quilts submitted to QuiltCon so fingers crossed for that. Just wish the Canadian dollar would pick up as the submission fee was over 40$ for me. Boo.
Question for you (and sorry if you’ve answered this elsewhere): how big are your strips when you start, and what seam allowance are you using? I’ll show you mine once I get it started….
Have a great rest of your week! Wow, it’s Tuesday. Thought it was Monday. Oops.
So excited to find your blog as I love working with tiny pieces…I seldom cut pieces for a specific quilt, but dig through my trimmed stash to create whatever develops.
