From my kitchen last week, I did a brief interview with Program Director Davana Robedee at the Schweinfurth Art Center.
You can listen to other interviews with fiber artists over here.
Have a great week!

I watched (listened) to this interview over the weekend….Dr. Kimber thanks for your Kitchen Talk. On Sunday, your Zoom with the Vermont group was informative…I never heard this particular presentation. I have always found textile history to be full of lessons.
Thanks for sharing the back story about the “guardhouse” on your campus…will look forward to the art installation your planning.
It was wonderful to see so many of your works in this interview. Thank you for your openness about your process – so moving. Your pieces are a lovely combination of technique and message, appearing almost deceptively simple, yet evocative and challenging emotionally, intellectually, and morally. As an evolving art quilter, I am inspired by you to keep reaching. As a human, I’m inspired to think and to act. Thank you.
Thank you to Chawne and Devonna for this kitchen talk. I’ve always admire Chawne’s work and it was good to hear her talk about the quilts. Unfortunately, the “I Can’t Breathe” quilt now has another Black man that it refers to as he died. Very powerful work.
I’ve admired you since before I knew who you were- I had the Fuck quilt as the background on my computer screen for quite a while. After getting to know your work better I admire you even more! Thanks for your Zoom with the Vermont Quilt Guild- I feel very fortunate to have gotten in on that and this interview just added more. You are a remarkable human with a gift of expression that makes us think and learn.
“I also make fun quilts.” 😂 👌🏼 Yes, you do. Pity that we’re slogging through some very heavy years lately. Loved hearing about your thought process for some of your most powerful statement quilts. Thank you for sharing.
I wasn’t able to attend your online lecture and was happy to check this out. I appreciate hearing your actual voice talk about the inspirations for your work. I admire the evolution of your work-the colors, fine details, the style, and of course the messages that come out crystal clear. I hope more podcasts take the time to interview you. And I can’t wait to see how your newest work turns out. Thank you for sharing.
I hope you get your hope back soon. My hope is renewed with the continued protests. I am old enough to know that protests don’t necessarily create the change they should, but I become more hopeful with the attention the protests get. I hope this results in continued positive change for all those without power.
Thank you, Chawne, for standing up, resisting, and sharing in a time when people should be listening.
You are one of my favourite strangers. Please don’t change.
Thanks so much for posting this video! I attended your Zoom call with the VMQG on Sunday as well. I have long admired your quilts and hearing you speak about them just makes me like them and you so much more. Thanks for sharing your very special skill with all of us.
Chawne. I enjoyed seeing this tonight. Mostly because I will miss you at AGOS this summer. Your voice rings so true and educational to me. So much I have been unconscious of. So much I need to learn . Your work makes me imagine what I can do.
So, Sis, I hope you are engaged in some radical self-care during these times, our bodies and our minds are under serious assault. As you know, we find ourselves having to confront these catastrophes – anti-Blackness colliding with a pandemic. Poetic and both bent on removing us from this earth. So, thank you for showing up for us in your craft work, just make sure you rest and protect yourself, we need you.
So wonderful to see and hear you! Loved hearing about the thinking behind your quilts and your willingness to it yourself out there to say what you feel through your art. I would love to get take one of your workshops some day!!
Really enjoyed the interview. While watching, you were much much larger than the desktop screen-I felt your heart & history. Thank you for speaking your piece/peace & sharing them. How can I access the Vermont event?
What a fantastic interview on so many levels! Thank you so much for your passion, audacity, and clarity. I was in awe of your steady willingness to delve into hard topics.
Also – so fun to feel a connection with a fellow outraged-quilter-nerd :)
Wow that was great! Thank you for explaining the legit quilt…I wondered about it, and not being American, I didn’t get the reference until now. Been following your work for many years, started when I found you on Flickr I think.
Very inspiring.
chawne: your quilts always tug at my heart strings – and my head. thank you for sharing your thoughts in such a profound way. take care.
